What is open interest and what does it mean in the futures market?

Open Interest is the number of outstanding open futures contracts that has not been closed out. Typically, Open Interest has a direct relationship with the Volume of the contract. A futures contract with a higher Open Interest is more likely to have higher Volume than one with a lower Open Interest.
