OpenAI Loses Key Design Leader After Shaping ChatGPT And Codex
OpenAI parted ways with its design leader, Ian Silber, after he helped shape ChatGPT, Codex, and other products.
"A personal update! Last Friday I wrapped up my time at OpenAI, after an incredible and unforgettable ride. I’ve spent the last couple of months helping to transition the design team and I know they are in great hands. I’m leaving feeling more bullish on the future of the company, its leadership and the team than ever and extremely thankful for my time there," Silber wrote in a post on X.
Silber was head of product design at OpenAI for a little over three years. Prior to that, he worked as a product designer at Global Illumination, and previously held other design roles at Artifact, Instagram, and Groupon.
Silber added that he plans to team up with former OpenAI employees Joseph Flynn and Thomas Dimson to "build something new." Flynn, a former product designer at OpenAI, and Dimson, a former member of the technical staff, both left OpenAI earlier this year. It is unclear what their next venture will be.
ChatGPT Maker Sees Influx of Employee Departures
OpenAI has seen more than a dozen executive exits in 2026. Business Insider counted 13 departures, with several clustered in the past month.
Last month, OpenAI chief operating officer Brad Lightcap, announced his departure from the artificial intelligence company amid plans to “start something new," meanwhile, former Data Center Chief Chris Malone left the company after a short stint. Malone joined OpenAI in March 2025 after time at Meta Platforms and Google.
OpenAI also recently replaced Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser, who had been in the role for about eight months. Dali Rajic was named in her place, and the company framed the hire as preparation for a new wave of models it expects to reshape how organizations operate.
OpenAI Product and Business Chief Fidji Simo also recently stepped down to address a “chronic illness,” although she continues to advise the company.
Earlier this year, computer scientist Aleksander Madry left the ChatGPT maker.
“I want to share that I’ve decided to leave OpenAI. Needless to say, this was not an easy decision. I’ve spent almost three years at OpenAI and, let me tell you, it has been the experience of a lifetime,” Madry wrote in a post on X at the time.
OpenAI ruled out an initial public offering for 2026, pointing to unresolved safety concerns around rapidly advancing artificial intelligence and the need to address alignment challenges facing the industry.
"Right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don’t feel pressure on that," CEO Sam Altman told Fortune.
