AI Was Expected to Drain Charles Schwab’s Cash — CEO Rick Wurster Says Traders Are Doing the Opposite: ‘The More People Use AI, the More Cash They Hold’

Benzinga·10/16/2026 09:31:02

Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE:SCHW) President and Chief Executive Officer Rick Wurster said retail clients using artificial intelligence to support their trading are holding more cash than other active traders. He noted that this behavior contradicts broader market concerns that AI automation might negatively impact brokerage cash levels.

The AI Trading Trend

During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, Wurster outlined how a subset of active retail traders are integrating artificial intelligence into their strategies. These clients are connecting their own large language models to Schwab via the firm’s application programming interfaces and a managed client platform layer.

Wurster noted that the number of clients trading through these AI connections “has doubled in about the last six months.”

‘Fears In The Market’ Dispelled

As this automated trading activity accelerates, Schwab is observing an unexpected trend regarding client liquidity. Wurster addressed market concerns that the rise of AI tools could ultimately drain the firm’s balance sheet.

“I know one of the fears in the market about us is that as AI takes off, it will impact cash levels,” Wurster stated. “We’re actually seeing the opposite impact, that the more people use AI, the more cash they hold because they’re more active in buying stocks.”

He elaborated that this specific group holds more cash because they “are focused on finding their next great investment.”

Cash Monetization Strategy

Wurster also addressed the firm’s broader approach to monetizing transactional cash amid these technological shifts.

“I like our cash strategy,” Wurster said. “It’s very simple. When a client comes in, until they tell us what they want to do with their cash, we keep it liquid, and we keep it in the most secure spot available.” He noted that this approach aligns with the interests of active traders while maintaining transparency.

Future AI Integration

While clients currently connect their own models, Schwab is preparing to launch a pilot program allowing traders to securely connect to the firm’s systems using the AI model of their choice, beginning with Claude. Additionally, Schwab is rolling out an “AI-powered think or swim assistant” to further support active traders.

Despite these technological advancements, Wurster emphasized that the company does not intend to develop proprietary quantitative trading algorithms for clients.

“I don’t think we want to be in the game of trying to produce quantitative alpha for our clients,” Wurster stated, characterizing the concept as a “fool’s errand.”
