ExxonMobil Holdings (NYSE:XOM) shares are trading slightly lower after closing near a 52-week high on Friday, as crude prices retreated from five-month highs following President Donald Trump’s waiver of Russia-related sanctions and tariffs.
In context, S&P 500 is almost 1% and the Energy sector down 0.7%.
On Friday, in its third-quarter 2026 earnings update, ExxonMobil said higher refining margins are expected to lift third-quarter Energy Products earnings by $4.5 billion versus the second quarter, while also flagging a $1.3 billion headwind from lower liquids prices in Upstream.
The company also pointed to a $300 million benefit from gas price changes, plus segment puts-and-takes that include Specialty Products up $500 million and Chemical Products facing a $600 million impact tied to refining margin changes.
With markets open, the tape is also showing a "risk-on" tilt—Technology is up 2.26% and Consumer Discretionary is up 1.71%—while market breadth is weak (only 2 sectors advancing), which can leave lagging groups like Energy (down 0.72%) near the bottom of the leaderboard. In that backdrop, XOM’s dip looks more like relative rotation and positioning near highs than a broad market risk-off move.
XOM is underperforming its sector on the day, down 0.85% versus Energy (XLE) down 0.72%, a lag of 0.14 percentage points. Energy is currently ranked 9 out of 11 sectors (bottom performing), which matters because even strong charts can stall when the group is out of favor.
The bigger picture for Energy has still been constructive: the sector is up 8.49% over the past 30 days and up 15.83% over the past 90 days. That sets up Monday’s weakness as a potential pause within an uptrend, but traders will watch whether leadership continues to rotate toward Technology (today’s top sector) or swings back to cyclicals like Energy.
The countdown is on: ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation is set to report earnings on October 30, 2026 (confirmed).
