Trump-Affiliated Could Face Congressional Scrutiny After Blue Midterm Sweep

Benzinga·11/04/2026 16:11:09

The shifting balance of power in Congress could expose World Liberty Financial (CRYPTO: WLFI) and the Official Trump (CRYPTO: TRUMP) token to fresh congressional subpoenas, according to a Bloomberg report Wednesday.

Why Democratic Control Changes the Investigation Math

Democratic committee chairs taking over in January can issue subpoenas compelling businesses and officials to produce documents or testify, with refusal punishable as criminal contempt of Congress, Bloomberg reported.

The Trump family’s cryptocurrency ventures specifically may be among the likely targets for renewed or new congressional probes, alongside the family’s stock trading and funding tied to the White House ballroom project.

That power has limits, though, since Congress can’t file criminal charges on its own, so any referral still depends on the Justice Department choosing to act.

Bloomberg noted Trump’s administration has increasingly used that discretion to shield allies from scrutiny.

Trump has also signaled he may pardon aides targeted by congressional investigators, a power Bloomberg noted presidents can use for any past offense even before charges are filed.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg also reported that impeachment remains unlikely to succeed even if Democrats pursue it, since removing a president requires a two-thirds Senate majority Democrats don’t hold, and party leaders downplayed the idea during the campaign in favor of running on affordability.

Why World Liberty Financial Sits at the Center of the Scrutiny

Abu Dhabi investment firm MGX used USD1, a stablecoin issued by Trump-linked World Liberty Financial, to invest $2 billion in Binance, a transaction Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) already questioned Treasury and Justice officials about in May 2025.

World Liberty earns interest on the reserves backing USD1, and a Trump-affiliated company holds an indirect economic interest in the stablecoin, a structure Warren argues let Trump’s push for stablecoin legislation directly benefit his family’s business.

Meanwhile, a White House spokesperson has told Benzinga earlier neither the president nor his family has a conflict of interest.
