Some Gates Industrial Corporation plc (NYSE:GTES) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that insider Gwendolyn Montgomery recently sold a substantial US$927k worth of stock at a price of US$22.60 per share. That sale reduced their total holding by 43% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Fredrik Eliasson bought US$1.2m worth of shares at a price of US$19.56 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$22.23. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Gates Industrial insiders own about US$101m worth of shares (which is 1.7% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
Insiders sold Gates Industrial shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Zooming out, the longer term picture doesn't give us much comfort. But it is good to see that Gates Industrial is growing earnings. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
