According to confirmation from Japan Nuclear Fuel Company, after a strong earthquake occurred in the middle of the night of December 8 off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in Japan, staff inspected the spent fuel pool at the nuclear waste treatment plant in Rokko-mura, Aomori Prefecture, and discovered “at least 100 liters of water” on the ground around the pond. According to the analysis, this water “may have overflowed from the spent fuel pool due to earthquake shaking”. However, it is alleged that the spilled water “remained inside the building and had no impact on the external environment”. Japan Nuclear Fuel Company also stated that since the water level of the spent fuel tank was “maintained” and the cooling function “remained normal,” there were “no safety issues.” Allegedly, up to now, “no other abnormalities caused by this earthquake have been detected,” and the readings of monitoring instruments used to measure radiation doses around the facility have “not changed.”
