US President Donald Trump said he might consider lowering tariffs on some US goods, while reiterating that extensive import taxes are helping to attract investment and revitalize long-suffering industries such as automobile and chip manufacturing. When asked in an interview with Politico if he ruled out lowering tariffs on more products other than coffee, beef, and bananas, Trump said he would lower “some, and I will raise tariffs on others.” He said that at a time when voters are protesting against the high prices of groceries, some of the exemptions he recently approved were only “insignificant exceptions and irrelevant.” In further questions about tariffs, Trump stated that “we have 18 trillion dollars flowing into our country,” clearly referring to investment promises made to the Trump administration by companies and countries that want to receive tariff relief.
