Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Jiayin Group Inc. (NASDAQ:JFIN) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Indeed, the recent drop has reduced its annual gain to a relatively sedate 5.6% over the last twelve months.
After such a large drop in price, it would be understandable if you think Jiayin Group is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.4x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Consumer Finance industry have P/S ratios above 1.7x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

Jiayin Group has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Jiayin Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Jiayin Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.0% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 153% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 48% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Jiayin Group's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The southerly movements of Jiayin Group's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
In line with expectations, Jiayin Group maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
