According to a Trump administration proposal, citizens of many countries, including the UK and France, must disclose their social media history over the past five years when visiting the US, even if they apply a visa-free program. The proposed requirement will apply to visitors using the electronic travel authorization system, which is part of a visa-free scheme covering 42 countries, including Italy, Japan, and Germany. This visa-free program allows citizens of selected countries to travel to the US for business or travel for up to 90 days without a visa. According to the proposed rules submitted by the US Customs and Border Protection, the Trump administration said the change was to comply with an executive order designed to protect the US from foreign threats. The agency said it is seeking public comments on the proposal for a period of 60 days. The proposal also stated that the ESTA website will be suspended and applications will be transferred to a mobile platform. It's unclear whether the proposed rule will only apply to public social media posts or include private SMS.
