——Wei Fenghua, Director of the Rural Affairs Department of the National Bureau of Statistics, explains the food production situation
In 2025, under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, departments in all regions strictly implemented arable land protection and food security responsibilities, overcame the impact of natural disasters such as droughts and floods, and carried out unrelenting grain production to achieve a good harvest throughout the year. In 2025, the country's grain production was 1429.75 billion kg, an increase of 16.75 billion kg over the previous year, an increase of 1.2%, and stabilized at more than 1.4 trillion kg.
1. The area planted with grain increased by 1.348 million mu, an increase of 0.1%
In 2025, the country will focus on improving the grain production support policy system, continue to raise the minimum purchase price of wheat and early indica rice, improve various subsidy policies, expand the full cost insurance and planting income insurance coverage area for major food varieties, initiate the implementation of inter-provincial horizontal benefit compensation for grain production and marketing areas under the coordination of the central government, increase support for major grain-producing counties, and fully mobilize farmers' enthusiasm to grow food and collect food locally. All regions have strictly implemented the shared responsibility of the Party and government for food security, strengthened the protection and quality improvement of arable land, and taken more measures to stabilize the sown area of grain through measures such as optimizing planting structures, promoting comprehensive land remediation, and increasing the reclamation and use of abandoned land. The country planted 1,791 million mu of grain, an increase of 1.348 million mu over the previous year, an increase of 0.1%, and continued to grow for 6 consecutive years.
(1) The area of corn has increased a lot, and the area of rice and wheat is basically stable. In 2025, 1,509 million mu of grain were planted in the country, an increase of 2,413 million mu over the previous year, an increase of 0.2%. Among them, 674 million mu of corn were sown, an increase of 3.31 million mu over the previous year, an increase of 0.5%, for three consecutive years; 435 million mu of rice was planted, an increase of 79,000 mu over the previous year, a slight increase of flat; 354 million mu of wheat was sown, a decrease of 83,000 mu from the previous year, which is basically the same.
(2) There was a slight decrease in the area of beans and potatoes. In 2025, 177 million mu of beans were planted in the country, a decrease of 625,000 mu and a decrease of 0.4% over the previous year. Among them, 154 million mu of soybeans were planted, a decrease of 99.00,000 mu from the previous year, a decrease of 0.6%, but it remained stable at more than 150 million mu for four consecutive years. The area of potatoes planted in the country was 105 million mu, a decrease of 440,000 mu over the previous year, a decrease of 0.4%.
2. Grain yield increased by 4.4 kg per mu, an increase of 1.1%
In 2025, although some regions experienced droughts, floods, and continuous rain, which had a certain impact on grain production, most rural areas in the country had a good match between light and water, and weather conditions were generally favorable to the growth and development of food crops and yield formation. All regions have further expanded the scale of implementation of grain yield improvement projects, increased the promotion of technologies such as rational densification and integration of water and fertilizer, and promoted a continuous increase in grain yield levels. The country's grain yield was 399.1 kg/mu, an increase of 4.4 kg per mu over the previous year, an increase of 1.1%.
(1) The yield of corn and rice increased, while the yield of wheat remained flat. In 2025, the country's grain yield was 437.4 kg/mu, an increase of 4.6 kg per mu over the previous year, an increase of 1.1%. Among them, the yield of corn was 446.7 kg/mu, an increase of 7.2 kg over the previous year, an increase of 1.6%; the yield of rice was 480.4 kg/mu, an increase of 3.4 kg over the previous year, an increase of 0.7%; and the yield of wheat was 396.0 kg/mu, the same as the previous year.
(2) The yield of both beans and potatoes has increased. In 2025, the country's yield of beans was 135.4 kg/mu. The yield per mu increased by 2.2 kg over the previous year, an increase of 1.6%. Among them, the yield of soybeans was 135.9 kg/mu, an increase of 2.5 kg over the previous year, an increase of 1.9%. The national potato yield was 292.3 kg/mu, an increase of 2.7 kg over the previous year, an increase of 0.9%.
