Today at around 11:44 local time, after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in the waters east of Aomori Prefecture in Japan and triggered a tsunami warning, Professor Shinichi Sakai of the Seismological Research Institute at the University of Tokyo pointed out in an interview with Japanese media, “The exact location of the epicenter is still unclear, but speculations may be part of previous seismic activity. We need to pay attention to the tremors caused by such earthquakes for some time to come. I hope the public will reconfirm previous disaster prevention preparations and preview specific countermeasures when the earthquake occurs.” Professor Hiroaki Takahashi of Hokkaido University said, “Although the epicenter of this earthquake was shallower than the 7.5 magnitude earthquake east of Aomori Prefecture in the middle of the night of December 8, since the aftershock area had spread to a shallower area, it can be assumed that today's earthquake is also a continuation of the previous series of seismic activities. Currently, the “Hokkaido-Sanriku Outer Sea Follow-up Earthquake Warning Information” is still being released, and there is still a possibility that earthquakes larger than the magnitude 6.7 earthquake and the magnitude 7.5 magnitude earthquake in the middle of the night of December 8 will occur in the future. We ask the public to reconfirm their daily disaster preparedness.”
