The board of MNtech Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:095500) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₩70.00 on the 3rd of April, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 0.6%, which is below the industry average.
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Based on the last payment, MNtech was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.
If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 10.0% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 9.1% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Even in its short history, we have seen the dividend cut. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ₩100.00 in 2021 to the most recent total annual payment of ₩70.00. This works out to be a decline of approximately 8.5% per year over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. It's encouraging to see that MNtech has been growing its earnings per share at 10% a year over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for MNtech's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think MNtech will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 2 warning signs for MNtech that investors need to be conscious of moving forward.
