In response to the successive cases of sexual violence by the US military in Okinawa, the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly unanimously passed an opinion to the central government of Japan at its plenary session on the 22nd, requesting the Japanese government to take effective measures to prevent such cases from occurring. The opinion notes that after a case of abduction and rape of a Japanese minor by US military soldiers stationed in Okinawa occurred in December 2023, the Japanese and US governments confirmed that measures would be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again. However, since then, cases of sexual violence involving the US military have occurred one after another in Okinawa. In 2025, the number of criminal offenses committed by US military personnel stationed in Okinawa reached a 20-year high, raising questions about the effectiveness of the US military's efforts to rectify military discipline and related measures. The opinion demands that the Japanese government take effective measures, including fundamentally revising the Japan-US status agreement to prevent similar cases from happening again.
