The French government will push for lawmakers to pass an emergency legislation to keep the country running until January next year. Previously, lawmakers failed to agree on the 2026 budget, prompting the government to adopt this temporary measure to avoid a government shutdown and deal with increasing pressure from investors and rating agencies. Government spokesman Maud Bregeon said on Monday that the special bill is intended to provide an opportunity for final negotiations. A joint committee composed of members of both houses failed to finalize the full 2026 budget on Friday, forcing French Prime Minister Le Corney to seek this temporary measure to extend spending, taxation, and borrowing rights until January next year. Quoting French President Emmanuel Macron, Bregeon added: “This special bill is not a budget... we must set the national budget as soon as possible in January.” Parliament is likely to approve the measure on Tuesday.
