On the 23rd local time, the World Food Programme announced that it is expanding the scale of aid to the Congo to provide aid to about 210,000 people displaced as a result of recent violent clashes in eastern Congo. The World Food Service said that although some food supplies have been pre-deployed in conflict areas, the World Food Administration urgently needs 67 million US dollars to maintain the aid work for three months. Since the outbreak of conflict in the Congolese province of South Kivu in early December, an estimated 500,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and basic public services are on the verge of collapse. Medical facilities have been looted, medicines are in short supply, and schools remain closed. The affected communities are extremely vulnerable and lack safe drinking water, health services and livelihoods. Education has been severely disrupted, and more than 391,000 children are out of school.
