Trump was indicted for adding his name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts last week without congressional approval. US Representative Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat, accused Trump and his appointed Kennedy Center board members of “deliberately flouting the law to satisfy defendant Trump's vanity.” The board, which is chaired by Trump himself and whose supporters serve as trustees, voted last Thursday to change the center's name to the “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Memorial Center.” A day later, staff placed Trump's name above JFK in front of this national music, dance, and drama center. Democrats and members of the Kennedy family — although not including Trump's Secretary of Health Robert Kennedy Jr. — strongly opposed the name change. According to the lawsuit, “The original purpose of Congress establishing the JFK Center was to make it a permanent memorial to President Kennedy and an artistic treasure belonging to all Americans, regardless of party affiliation. Since the center was named by decree of Congress, changing the name of the JFK Center requires passing Congress.”
