On December 25, local time, Japan's Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced the results of a follow-up survey of the two organofluorinated compounds perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid in tap water from various parts of the country after October 1, 2024. The results show that in waterworks operated by local governments and small-scale simple waterways, water quality testing work is progressing, and the previous excessive situation has basically been eliminated; however, about half of the special waterways that supply water to workers' dormitories, hospitals, etc., have not yet been tested for water quality, and the actual situation is still ungrasped. In 2020, the Japanese government included perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctane acid as targets of water quality testing standards. The standard is 50 ng/L of the two substances in total. From April 2020 to August 2025, there were 59 cases of organic fluoride exceeding the standard in dedicated waterways.
