Tech media Wccftech published a blog post on December 25, reporting that the severe shortage of global memory chips is triggering a “war for goods” among tech giants. As demand for artificial intelligence explodes, the global memory chip market, especially high-bandwidth memory and low-power memory, is facing an unprecedented shortage. The crisis has forced executives from tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta to enter South Korea one after another to try to reach long-term supply agreements with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. However, the negotiation process was extremely difficult and even led to violent conflict. According to South Korean media reports, after a recent visit to SK Hynix headquarters, Microsoft executives angrily “stormed out of the conference room” on the spot because they were told that it was “difficult to meet” the required supply conditions. According to the blog post, supply chain tension has triggered more severe personnel changes within Google. Google has reportedly fired a relevant procurement executive because it failed to anticipate market tightening and signing long-term agreements ahead of time, causing the company to face the risk of insufficient supply of HBM. Google's AI accelerator is heavily reliant on HBM, with around 60% of its supply coming from Samsung.
