United Arrows' (TSE:7606) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

Listen to the news

United Arrows Ltd. (TSE:7606) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 24th of June to ¥54.00. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 3.0%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

United Arrows' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, United Arrows' earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. No cash flows could definitely make returning cash to shareholders difficult, or at least mean the balance sheet will come under pressure.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 15.0%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 48%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥78.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥74.00. The dividend has shrunk at a rate of less than 1% a year over this period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. United Arrows has impressed us by growing EPS at 53% per year over the past five years. The company's earnings per share has grown rapidly in recent years, and it has a good balance between reinvesting and paying dividends to shareholders, so we think that United Arrows could prove to be a strong dividend payer.

Our Thoughts On United Arrows' Dividend

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think United Arrows will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think United Arrows is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
