On December 28, local time, the Central Bank of Syria held a press conference to announce the issuance of a new Syrian pound. The head of the Central Bank of Syria said that 100 old Syrian pounds were exchanged for 1 new Syrian pound. During the currency replacement period, the old and new currencies will coexist and have the same legal effect. The currency replacement process will commence on January 1, 2026 for a period of 90 days, which can be extended. Extension decisions will be posted 30 days prior to the end of each extension. As of 1 January 2026, all bank account balances and electronic accounts will be settled in new Syrian pounds. The Central Bank of Syria said that in the process of designing and issuing the new currency, international security standards and anti-counterfeiting measures were taken into account, while at the same time highlighting the cultural, historical and geographical characteristics of Syria, reflecting its deep historical heritage, rich geographical diversity, and people's desire for stability and progress.
