Nasdaq Jumps Over 200 Points As Software Stocks Rebound: Investor Sentiment Improves, Fear & Greed Index Moves To 'Neutral' Zone

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed further improvement in the overall market sentiment, while the index moved to the “Neutral” zone on Monday.

U.S. stocks settled mostly higher on Monday, with the Nasdaq Composite jumping more than 200 points during the session. The Dow Jones index also notched fresh record highs on Monday after recording sharp gains in the previous session.

Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO) moved higher again on Monday, extending their gains from the prior session. Shares of Oracle Corp. (NYSE:ORCL) jumped around 10% on Monday after D.A. Davidson upgraded the stock from Neutral to Buy.

In earnings, Sally Beauty Holdings Inc. (NYSE:SBH) posted better-than-expected earnings for the first quarter. Becton Dickinson and Co. (NYSE:BDX) on Monday reported upbeat earnings for the first quarter.

Most sectors on the S&P 500 closed on a positive note, with materials, energy and information technology stocks recording the biggest gains on Monday. However, consumer staples and health care stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.

The Dow Jones closed higher by around 20 points to 50,135.87 on Monday. The S&P 500 jumped 0.47% to 6,964.82, while the Nasdaq Composite jumped 0.90% at 23,238.67 during Monday's session.

Investors are awaiting earnings results from Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:KO), CVS Health Corp. (NYSE:CVS) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F) today.

What Is CNN Business Fear & Greed Index?

At a current reading of 48.3, the index moved to the “Neutral” zone on Monday, versus a prior reading of 43.9.

The Fear & Greed Index is a measure of the current market sentiment. It is based on the premise that higher fear exerts pressure on stock prices, while higher greed has the opposite effect. The index is calculated based on seven equal-weighted indicators. The index ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 represents maximum fear and 100 signals maximum greediness.
