On the afternoon of June 1, local time, and early this morning Beijing time, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the situation in Lebanon and Israel. Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Fu Cong, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, pointed out that the situation between Lebanon and Israel has escalated dramatically, Israel is expanding its military operations against Lebanon, continuing to expand the so-called “security zone”, and even crossing the Litani River to occupy Beaufort Castle. This is Israel's deepest military operation against Lebanon in more than 20 years. The Israeli side also claimed that it would further expand ground operations, and the intentions behind it and the serious consequences resulting from this have caused deep concern to the international community. The Lebanese-Israel cease-fire has come to an end, and the international community must take urgent action before the situation slides to a more dangerous abyss. Ambassador Fu Cong called for an immediate cease-fire to stop the war and calm the tense situation; to increase support for Lebanon to stabilize the domestic situation; and to ensure that UNIFIL carries out its duties and maintain regional stability.
