On July 8, local time, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Weaver said while attending the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, that NATO and the US cannot agree on a military attack on Iran. This issue is not actually a NATO issue, nor is it conducive to NATO unity. DeWeaver pointed out that the collective defense clause in the North Atlantic Treaty stipulates joint defense when attacked, but it does not stipulate that when one party unilaterally decides to attack another country, all other member states must participate. DeWeaver said that this is not in line with the spirit of NATO and that it is “unreasonable” to expect NATO allies to participate in such actions.
