Listen to the news

While Amerigo Resources Ltd. (TSE:ARG) shareholders have had a good week with the stock up 10%, they shouldn't let their guards down. Even though stock prices were relatively low, insiders elected to sell US$6.1m worth of stock in the last year, which could indicate some expected downturn.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Amerigo Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, George Ireland, for CA$1.4m worth of shares, at about CA$2.35 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (CA$6.87). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 4.9% of George Ireland's holding.

Does Amerigo Resources Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Amerigo Resources insiders own about CA$125m worth of shares. That equates to 12% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

Insiders haven't bought Amerigo Resources stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying.
