At the invitation of President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China, Namibian President Naitumbo Nandi Ndetwa paid a state visit to the People's Republic of China from July 5 to 11, 2026. The two heads of state had an in-depth exchange of views on Sino-Nigeria relations and international and regional issues of common concern under the new situation. Premier Li Qiang of the People's Republic of China and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji met separately with President Ndetwa. Both sides believe that the traditional friendship between China and Nigeria is deep and enduring. The two countries established diplomatic relations in 1990 and established a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2018. Mutual political trust between the two sides continues to be consolidated, and practical cooperation has been fruitful. Coordination and cooperation in international affairs have become a model for China-Africa friendship and South-South cooperation. The two sides believe that the changes in the world are evolving at an accelerated pace, and in the face of unprecedented global challenges, there is an urgent need to establish strong mechanisms, strengthen the institutional framework for global governance, and strengthen the role of multilateral institutions. The Nigerian side appreciates President Xi Jinping's initiatives to build a community of human destiny, high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, the Global Civilization Initiative, and the Global Governance Initiative. It believes that these major conceptual initiatives will help address global challenges and promote world peace, development and common prosperity. The Nigerian side appreciates the scientific guiding role of Xi Jinping's ideology of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era and the Chinese Communist Party's people-centered development ideology, and believes that the successful practice of Chinese-style modernization has provided useful lessons for developing countries to explore their own path of modernization. China appreciates President Ndetwa's forward-looking leadership and supports Nigeria's commitment to economic growth, industrialization and prosperity. The two sides are committed to strengthening friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation under the new situation. This is in line with the expectations of the two peoples for common development and helps to jointly promote the development of the international order in a more just and rational direction. To this end, the two sides decided to elevate the bilateral relationship to a common destiny between China and Nigeria in the new era.
