SK Hynix is considering new ways to sell the rights to use its memory chips, including so-called “memory as a service,” which means customers can rent storage resources from the Korean company without buying chips. “We can actually provide other business models,” SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won said in an interview. “We can be a storage service provider, providing 'memory as a service'. In the future, this is actually another area we can focus on.” Choi Tae-won did not specify how this business model would work, and stated that new software support is needed. However, at present, technology companies have adopted business models such as “software as a service”, which allows customers to pay usage fees to obtain software or computing power without purchasing products. Choi Tae-won said that the goal of launching this new service is to solve the memory capacity bottleneck.
