South Korean officials said on Sunday that since the original military airport site in the southwestern city of Gwangju was selected as a landing site for a large-scale semiconductor industry cluster, the relocation of the airport is progressing at an accelerated pace. The former Gwangju military airport site was designated as an industrial cluster site and is one of the South Korean government's “Three Key Projects” plans. These three major projects focus on large-scale local deployment of semiconductor, physical artificial intelligence, and artificial intelligence data center industries. A special committee composed of central and local government officials will meet at the end of this month to finalize an alternative airport site after the relocation. Muan-gun was selected as an initial candidate site in April. The local government in charge of Gwangju anticipates that the new airport site will be finalized before the end of this year. The local plan is to simultaneously promote airport relocation and industrial cluster construction, with the goal of starting semiconductor production by 2030.
