US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz on Sunday questioned Iran's earlier statements conveyed by US officials. The Iranian side claims that the previous attack on a navigation ship in the Strait of Hormuz was an “operational mistake” on its own side. In an interview, Waltz said, “Should we believe that a few grassroots military officers opened fire and attacked the ship without permission, yet the strict system of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps did not punish them in any way? I don't believe it at all.” A US official said on Friday that Iran admitted during communication with the US that the attack on the merchant ship earlier this week was a mistake. However, according to US Central Command sources, Iran blatantly attacked another ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. Waltz stated, “What Iran is doing is against international law. Whether involved in conflict or not, we must not open fire everywhere, attack neighboring countries, attack civilian ships and civil infrastructure, lay mines on international waterways, and commit irresponsible acts that everyone has always criticized.” Waltz said that although the Iranian leadership “is extremely difficult to communicate,” technical dialogue between the US and Iran continues to advance.
