Dubai Global Ports Group plans to build a new port and container terminal on the east coast of the UAE. This move will reduce Dubai's dependence on the flagship Jebel Ali Port hub and enable cargo transportation to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. People familiar with the matter revealed that the Dubai-based port operator is discussing the construction of a comprehensive multi-use port in the coastal area of Fujairah and the expansion of a new container terminal in the area's existing port area. Over the past 20 years, Dubai Global Ports has grown into one of the most widely internationalized enterprises in the UAE, building a global port logistics industry, yet Jebel Ali Port has always been the core asset of the Group and Dubai. Relocating part of the port's capacity outside of Dubai is a disruptive transformation for the Emirate of Dubai. Dubai's ability to grow into a global trade and financial center depends largely on the development dividends of Jebel Ali Port. However, the layout of Dubai Global Port is in line with the UAE government's larger strategic plan: by reducing dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, building an economic defense barrier to withstand the impact of future clashes with Iran. Since the US and Israel launched an attack, Iran has repeatedly used drones and missiles to attack merchant ships in the strait, and shipping order continues to be disrupted.
