On July 14, local time, the European Union and Britain formally signed a treaty on Gibraltar in Brussels. According to the treaty, residents of Gibraltar can enter Spain with a residence card, and Spanish citizens can use government identity documents when entering Gibraltar. Passengers arriving at Gibraltar Airport will be subject to passport control by Gibraltar-Spain border officials. The agreement was signed by the EU Trade Commission, the British Secretary of State for European Affairs, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Chief Minister of Gibraltar. The treaty is based on an agreement reached in 2025. Located at the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula, Gibraltar is a British overseas territory, bordering Spain. Since Britain passed the referendum on leaving the European Union in 2016, the border between Gibraltar under British control and the European Union has always been an issue on which the two sides have not reached consensus.
