The Indian government announced that it will begin continuous monitoring of all ships carrying Indian citizens passing through the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman. Indian seafarers account for more than 12% of the world's total seafarers. The Indian government issued a statement on Tuesday evening saying that the General Administration of Shipping of India will set up a monitoring platform to track every Indian citizen on a ship in the above area, regardless of what kind of flag the ship flies. After two merchant ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz were attacked on Tuesday, killing an Indian crew member and injuring 10 others, India summoned Iran's deputy ambassador to protest. “India is strongly outraged and opposed to attacks against defenseless commercial vessels,” India's Minister of Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal said in a statement. “These irresponsible, unfounded, and completely unnecessary attacks have led to the death and serious injury of Indian seafarers. And they are important workers in keeping the global supply chain running smoothly.”
