German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz said that he is not fundamentally opposed to Yushin Bank's attempt to acquire Commerzbank, but he doesn't like the way the Italian bank operates. Mertz pointed out that the German government, which still holds more than 12% of Commerzbank's shares, has not sold its shares to Yushin Bank, but “quite a large percentage” of investors have made a different decision. Mertz said he agreed that Europe needed large, competitive banks, and that the ownership structure of the company should be decided by shareholders rather than the government, but he wanted to know the relevant business model because Commerzbank plays an important role in financing German SMEs.
