Japanese hotel operator Mori Trust recently released a forecast that the number of foreign visitors to Japan will drop 2% to 5% year-on-year to 40.5 million to 42 million in 2026. Mori Trust currently operates 35 hotels across Japan and plans to develop 16 new hotels. According to the report, in the first 5 months of 2026, the number of Chinese visitors to Japan decreased by 56% year on year, while visitors from other countries and regions increased by 14% year on year. Mori Trust estimates that if the second half of the year continues at the pace of the first half, the number of visitors to Japan will reach about 42 million throughout the year. Even if the growth rate of overseas customers slows down in the second half of the year, the annual scale will remain at 40.5 million to 41.6 million people. The goal proposed by the Japanese government is to achieve 60 million visitors to Japan and 15 trillion yen in tourism revenue by 2030. Mori Trust predicts that if visitors to Japan from countries and regions other than China maintain an average annual growth rate of 10% after 2027, this target can be achieved.
