06:42 AM EDT, 07/20/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Commission fined Alibaba Group's Chinese online retail giant AliExpress 550 million euros for failing to adequately reduce the risk of counterfeit products being sold on its platform. The regulator said Monday that AliExpress breached the Digital Services Act by failing to detect illegal products, penalize traders selling such items, verify that products were correctly categorized to prevent circumvention of the system, and adequately avert the spread of counterfeit goods. The commission ordered the e-commerce platform to submit an action plan by Oct. 20, which must detail measures to address the breaches and mitigate systemic risks. Failure to comply could result in periodic penalty payments. Alibaba Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
