E J Holdings Inc. (TSE:2153) just released a solid earnings report, and the stock displayed some strength. Despite this, our analysis suggests that there are some factors weakening the foundations of those good profit numbers.
In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. As it happens, E J Holdings issued 14% more new shares over the last year. Therefore, each share now receives a smaller portion of profit. To talk about net income, without noticing earnings per share, is to be distracted by the big numbers while ignoring the smaller numbers that talk to per share value. You can see a chart of E J Holdings' EPS by clicking here.
As you can see above, E J Holdings has been growing its net income over the last few years, with an annualized gain of 10% over three years. But on the other hand, earnings per share actually fell by 3.3% per year. And over the last 12 months, the company grew its profit by 5.2%. But that's starkly different from the 7.2% drop in earnings per share. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is influencing shareholder earnings.
If E J Holdings' EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

Each E J Holdings share now gets a meaningfully smaller slice of its overall profit, due to dilution of existing shareholders. Because of this, we think that it may be that E J Holdings' statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. In further bad news, its earnings per share decreased in the last year. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing E J Holdings at this point in time.
