On Thursday, the Brazilian government rejected the tariffs imposed by the US on the country and 59 other trading partners on the grounds of forced labor, calling the move “arbitrary” and “untenable.” The Brazilian government said in a statement: “In the absence of a domestic legal basis to support its protectionist trade policies, the US Trade Representative chose to manipulate an issue critical to the human rights and labor rights movement.” According to this measure, Brazilian exports to the US will be subject to a 12.5% tariff. Brazil added that it will immediately launch procedures to activate a countermeasure mechanism in accordance with the Law of Reciprocity, and submit the case to the World Trade Organization dispute settlement mechanism. The new tariffs imposed by the US on dozens of trading partners will come into effect on Friday, citing insufficient enforcement of the forced labor ban in the relevant markets.
