Waste Management bull case hits key margin milestones

Bulls argue Waste Management can turn sustainability, healthcare waste and automation into a higher margin, higher quality earnings story. Q2 goes a fair way toward proving that. Operating EBITDA grew faster than revenue and margin expanded about 40 bps, with technology helping keep collection operating costs to roughly 1.7% growth against about 4% wage inflation. Recycling and renewable natural gas together lifted operating EBITDA about 33% and added roughly 30 bps to company margin. Healthcare Solutions is tracking the synergy script, with segment margin at 19% and SG&A about 15% lower, while cross sell has already delivered about US$32m of annualized EBITDA on the way to the US$50m target. Free cash flow of roughly US$2.02b in the first half, alongside leverage near the 2.5x to 3x range, supports the dividend and buyback narrative.

Bear case flags volume softness and execution risk

The bear story centers on rich expectations meeting slower growth, volume risk and integration stretch. Q2 does give bears some support on growth. Management trimmed 2026 revenue guidance by roughly 0.5% and now expects full year Collection and Disposal volume to decline about 1% once last year’s wildfire work is stripped out. Several renewable natural gas plants are built but cannot yet connect to pipelines, which pushes that revenue and EBITDA out. Energy surcharges are helping revenue today but clipping margin by about 20 bps and could fade. Healthcare synergies are progressing, yet the US$300m target by 2027 and higher post Stericycle leverage still require several years of clean execution. Softer commercial volumes and some national account losses also show that Waste Management’s competitive moat does not fully insulate it from customer churn.
