Macau Monetary Authority: Macau residents' deposits and loans declined month-on-month in June

The Zhitong Finance App learned that the Macau Monetary Authority released monetary and financial statistics for June 2026 on August 3. The broad money supply declined in June 2026. At the same time, residents' deposits and loans both declined month-on-month.

Currency in circulation and demand deposits decreased by 1.2% and 1.0%, respectively. As a result, M1 decreased by 1.1% month-on-month. At the same time, quasi-monetary liabilities fell 1.8%, so the broad money supply M2, which includes M1 and quasi-monetary liabilities, fell 1.7% to MOP 847.6 billion. According to currency analysis, the shares of MOP, HKD, RMB and USD in M2 were 32.4%, 43.2%, 8.0% and 14.6%, respectively.

Residents' deposits decreased by 1.7% month-on-month to MOP 825.3 billion, while non-residents' deposits increased by 11.6% to MOP 379.5 billion. Meanwhile, public sector deposits in the banking system increased by 3.0% to MOP 269.8 billion. Combined, total deposits in the banking system increased by 2.3% to MOP 1,474.7 billion; of these, MOP, HKD, RMB and USD accounted for 18.6%, 44.1%, 9.4% and 26.3%, respectively.

Local private sector loans fell 0.7% month-on-month to MOP 476.5 billion. According to economic use analysis, at the end of the second quarter of 2026, bank loans to the “water, electricity and gas production and supply industry” and “wholesale and retail business” increased by 7.8% and 2.1%, respectively, while loans to the “catering and hospitality industry” and “construction industry” recorded declines of 6.2% and 3.3% respectively. Furthermore, external sector loans increased by 0.4% month-on-month to MOP 563.6 billion. Total loans in the banking system decreased by 0.1% to MOP 1,040.1 billion; of these, MOP, HKD, RMB and USD accounted for 22.1%, 40.2%, 16.3% and 17.5%, respectively.

Operating ratio

By the end of June 2026, the bank's overall loan-to-deposit ratio fell to 70.5% from 72.2% at the end of May, while the loan-to-deposit ratio for local residents remained flat at 43.5%. The current asset-to-debt ratio calculated over a period of one month and three months was at the level of 59.0% and 48.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the ratio of non-performing loans remained flat at 4.5% on a monthly basis.
