Japan's Furukawa Electric announced on Tuesday that in order to respond to the strong demand for hyperscale data centers, it plans to invest 100 billion yen to double the current production capacity. The company expects demand for high-quality fiber optic cables to grow significantly in the medium to long term. At the time of making this investment decision, it was confirmed that customer procurement commitments, including long-term procurement commitments, were obtained. As for when the new production capacity is launched, the company expects mass production one after another in the second half of fiscal year 2028. As a result, the investment had little impact on results for the fiscal year ending March 2027. In addition to its main optical fiber business, Furukawa Electric is also developing data center cooling component products. The company is promoting related investments of 55 billion yen in many parts of Asia.
