UL Solutions (ULS) Stock Slide Puts Premium Valuation Under Pressure

Simply Wall St·08/04/2026 22:34:19
Listen to the news

UL Solutions just gave shareholders a harsh reality check. The stock slumped almost 14% to US$78.34 on the day of the Q2 release, even as the company posted record quarterly revenue of US$816m and record adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of US$219m.

In the very short term, the focus is on that sharp price drop and a 3 month slide of about 25%. Over a longer horizon, investors will care more about the expanding 26.8% adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization margin and whether that margin story can hold up against the premium P/E multiple.

Is UL Solutions now mispriced after the sharp pullback, or does the premium 31.2x trailing P/E still look justified once that US$154.0m one off gain is stripped out? Compare ULS against peers and the sector in the full valuation analysis for UL Solutions

UL Solutions bull case: cash, margins, and secular demand

Bulls argue UL Solutions is building a high quality, annuity like earnings stream powered by regulation, electrification and higher value software. Q2 goes a long way toward backing that up. Organic revenue grew 6.6% even with roughly 1% drag from business exits, which points to healthy underlying testing and certification demand. Certification testing grew more than 10% and was led by volume rather than just price, which supports the idea of structurally rising workloads.

On profitability, adjusted EBITDA reached US$219m with margin at 26.8%, and management still targets about 27% for 2026. Free cash flow over the last 12 months was US$436m with a 13.9% margin, alongside lower net debt. Investments in the new automotive EMC lab, hydrogen and AI enabled ULTRUS UL 360 are already sitting next to stronger Consumer and Risk & Compliance margins, which fits the bullish thesis of higher value mix over time.

UL Solutions bear case: execution, capex and market reaction

The bear view is that UL Solutions relies on steady margin gains and flawless execution while spending heavily, with little room for disappointment. Q2 does not dismiss that concern. The stock fell about 14% on the print and is down roughly 25% over 3 months, even as revenue, adjusted EBITDA and EPS all moved up year on year. That price reaction suggests expectations were high and any perceived limit to margin upside or growth runway hit investor confidence.

Capital intensity is front and center. CapEx is guided to about 8.5% of revenue, above the historical 6% to 8% range, which can pressure free cash flow if growth slows. Industrial margin slipped 10 bps despite healthy revenue, which is a reminder that incentive costs and mix can offset operating leverage. Bears also point to a higher effective tax rate near 26% and reliance on portfolio actions like the DQS sale and Eurofins E&E acquisition to support the story.

Compare UL Solutions' margin story and cash generation with how the stock just fell almost 14% in a single session, then see whether analysts think the pullback resets the bar or signals more downside in the consensus price target analysis for UL Solutions.
