Lufthansa (XTRA:LHA) Stock Price Trails Record Revenue As Margins Crumple

Simply Wall St·08/05/2026 01:36:27
Listen to the news

The market came into this earnings print already on the back foot. Deutsche Lufthansa shares closed at €8.48 on 4 August, down about 6% over the past week and 15% over the past month. Yet Q2 told a more nuanced story. The group delivered a record €11.1b in revenue but saw adjusted EBIT squeezed to €883m as fuel and disruption bit into profits.

In the very short term that profit pressure is what traders are reacting to. Longer term investors will be weighing that margin strain against a share price that still trades far below one prominent fair value estimate.

Lufthansa Bull Case Meets Mixed Operational Reality

Bulls argue Lufthansa’s tighter execution and premium focus can lift margins and diversify earnings. Q2 gives partial support. Cargo and Technik are clear milestones hit, with cargo delivering about €160m adjusted EBIT on more than €1b revenue and Technik adding €157m EBIT on €2.2b revenue. These units show the higher margin, more resilient profit streams that the thesis highlights.

The premium and network story is less convincing this quarter. Management reports robust demand for premium cabins and Asia routes and is pushing ahead with Allegris and the FOX onboard experience. However, group adjusted EBIT dropped to €883m on a 3.4% margin, with Network Airlines heavily hit by about €600m of fuel impact and higher unit costs. The promised margin upside from cost discipline and digital productivity is not yet visible at group level given the current fuel and disruption backdrop.

Bear Fears On Costs And Execution Largely Playing Out

The bearish view on Deutsche Lufthansa has centred on structurally higher costs, fuel and SAF exposure, capital intensity and execution risk on upgrades and M&A. Q2 goes a long way towards confirming those concerns. Group revenue reached a record, yet adjusted EBIT fell to €883m and margin compressed to 3.4%. Management attributes about €750m of extra fuel costs and €150m strike impact, while unit costs excluding fuel in Network Airlines still rose about 3.1% despite capacity cuts. That lines up closely with the thesis that regulation, fuel and labour tension keep the cost base sticky.

Execution risk also looks real. Aircraft delivery delays, capacity reductions and a wider EBIT guidance range of €1.7 to €2.2b show the fleet and premium investments are not yet translating into more resilient margins. Cargo and Technik are bright spots, but they are not offsetting the pressure in the core passenger business.

After a quarter where profit margins compressed and dividend coverage looked stretched, it is worth asking whether these issues are isolated or structural. Review the full risk analysis for Deutsche Lufthansa which shows 2 important warning signs
