The recent price decline of 10.0% in SportsHero Limited's (ASX:SHO) stock may have disappointed insiders who bought AU$720.0k worth of shares at an average price of AU$0.072 in the past 12 months. Insiders purchase with the hope of seeing their investments increase in value over time. However, due to recent losses, their initial investment is now only worth AU$360.0k, which is not great.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
The CEO & Director Thomas Napong Tonavanik made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$420k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.07 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than AU$0.036 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Thomas Napong Tonavanik.
Thomas Napong Tonavanik bought a total of 10.00m shares over the year at an average price of AU$0.072. For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. SportsHero insiders own about AU$12m worth of shares. That equates to 38% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
It is good to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. When combined with notable insider ownership, these factors suggest SportsHero insiders are well aligned, and that they may think the share price is too low. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Case in point: We've spotted 5 warning signs for SportsHero you should be aware of, and 2 of these can't be ignored.
