National Bureau of Statistics: CPI rose 0.5% year on year in July

The Zhitong Finance App learned that on August 9, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that in July 2026, national consumer prices rose 0.5% year on year. Among them, urban prices rose 0.5%, rural areas rose 0.4%; food prices fell 1.5%, non-food prices rose 0.9%; consumer goods prices rose 0.2%; and service prices rose 0.7%. On average from January to July, national consumer prices rose 0.9% over the same period last year. In July, consumer prices across the country fell 0.1% month-on-month. Among them, urban prices fell 0.1%, rural areas fell 0.2%; food prices remained flat, and non-food prices fell 0.1%; consumer goods prices fell 0.6%, and service prices rose 0.4%.

I. Year-on-year changes in prices of various goods and services

In July, food, tobacco, alcohol and food and beverage prices fell 0.8% year on year, affecting the CPI (Consumer Price Index) decline by about 0.22 percentage points. Among food products, the price of livestock and meat fell by 6.0%, affecting the CPI decline by about 0.25 percentage points, of which pork price fell 13.3%; the price of milk fell by 1.5%, which affected the CPI drop by about 0.02 percentage points; the price of fresh fruit fell by 1.1%, affecting the CPI decline by about 0.02 percentage points; and the price of eggs rose 14.4%, affecting the CPI increase by about 0.07 percent.

Prices in the other seven categories rose and fell six times over the same period last year. Among them, prices of other goods and services and health care increased by 5.8% and 2.9% respectively; prices of clothing, education, culture and entertainment increased by 1.4% and 1.3% respectively; prices of daily necessities, services, transportation and communication increased by 0.8% and 0.4%, respectively; and housing prices decreased by 0.3%.

II. Month-on-month changes in prices of various goods and services

In July, food, tobacco, alcohol, and food and beverage prices remained flat month-on-month. Among food products, the price of livestock and meat rose 1.9%, affecting the CPI increase by about 0.07 percent, of which the price of pork rose by 4.1%; the price of fresh vegetables rose by 1.3%, affecting the CPI increase by about 0.02 percent; the price of fresh fruit fell by 3.8%, affecting the CPI decline by about 0.07 percent; and the price of eggs fell 1.7%, affecting the CPI decline by about 0.01 percent.

Prices in the other seven categories rose three times over the previous month, two flat and two fell. Among them, prices of education, culture and entertainment, health care, daily necessities and services increased by 1.0%, 0.8%, and 0.4%, respectively; prices of housing, other goods and services remained flat; and prices of transportation, communications, and clothing decreased by 2.2% and 0.4%, respectively.
