On the 11th, the Latvian government launched a nationwide concerted operation codenamed “Operation Werewolf” to curb illegal immigration activities on the country's border with Belarus. According to a press release issued by the Latvian Prime Minister's Office, the operation was initiated by Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs. The crisis management center of the Prime Minister's Office coordinates the joint operation of various parties, including border guards under the Ministry of the Interior, the National Police Service, and the national armed forces. The plan is to continue until the end of August. Since 2021, the Latvian side has continued to tighten border control policies at the border with Belarus due to forced immigration, and now only motor vehicles are allowed to pass through the Patnieki port. The Latvian government decided on July 1 to extend the heightened state of alert in the Latvian border area until the end of this year. According to local media reports, since this year, Latvian border guards have intercepted nearly 9,500 illegal border crossing attempts.
