Foreign companies have invested 6 trillion yen in the Japanese chip industry, and this figure has further expanded as Sony Group and TSMC recently announced the construction of image sensor factories. TSMC has invested 3 trillion yen in two of its fabs in Japan. Among them, the first fab has begun mass production of logic chips in 2024, and the second one is currently under construction. Micron Technology launched a plant expansion project in Hiroshima Prefecture last month, and plans to invest 1.5 trillion yen to produce advanced memory chips. Such chips are essential for artificial intelligence data centers. Also in July, Israeli chip manufacturer Tower Semiconductor announced that it would invest 600 billion yen to mass-produce optical communication equipment chips used in data centers.
