National Vision Holdings slipped about 2% today to roughly US$19 as traders reacted to softer traffic headlines. The stock came into this earnings print after a choppy few months, yet the quarter itself was defined less by sales noise and more by profit repair, with adjusted operating margin reported at 6.3% and adjusted earnings per share at US$0.25.
For long term investors, that margin story is the real headline. Management also lifted full year adjusted operating income guidance, which shifts the focus from a weak day in the share price to a multi quarter effort to rebuild profitability.

Bulls have argued that National Vision Holdings can grow by leaning into higher value customers, premium frames and better store productivity rather than chasing raw traffic. Q2 lines up with that view in several places. Adjusted comps were up 2.2%, yet ticket rose 7.1% while transactions fell about 4.9%. Management attributes more than half of the ticket lift to mix, with strong take up in anti reflective coatings, Transitions, premium progressives and designer frames. Adjusted operating margin reached 6.3%, up 140 bps year on year, and full year adjusted operating income guidance moved higher. That points to progress on the profit repair milestone, supported by roughly US$10m of targeted cost savings this year and a balance sheet at about 0.9x net debt to adjusted EBITDA, which helps support continued investment in marketing and new stores.
The main bear worry is that National Vision Holdings is trading short term traffic and volume for a narrower, more premium customer base that may not be sustainable, especially against online and low cost rivals. Q2 does not fully clear that concern. Transactions declined about 4.9% and management cites weaker activity among value seeking customers on top of a 7 day share price drop of about 15%. Some of that is tied to the six week e commerce replatform disruption that management estimates clipped comps by roughly 150 bps, but some reflects a deliberate shift in mix. Inventory is up 37% year on year to support premium assortment and segmentation. Management says stock is centrally held, yet bears will watch closely for any slower sell through or heavier promotions if traffic remains under pressure while inventory stays elevated.
With earnings now positive but a rich P/E around 29.9x and a profit repair story still in progress, it is worth checking whether National Vision Holdings has the balance sheet strength to ride out any setback.
