The water level in the Kaub section of the middle reaches of the Rhine in Germany fell to a record low of about 8 centimeters. The previous record was 25 centimeters in October 2018. The Kaub section is located between Koblenz and Mainz in Rhineland-Palatinate, and is an important reference point for measuring the Rhine's shipping conditions. The German Inland Waterways Association warned that if the water level in Kaub falls to single digits, the Rhine may not be able to maintain full navigation, and north-south shipping may even be “cut off.” Currently, shipping south of Kaub has been severely restricted, and it is predicted that the water level will drop further to 5 to 6 centimeters over the weekend.
