Solar (CPSE:SOLAR B) Stock Faces Margin Strain After Wider Q2 Loss

Simply Wall St·08/14/2026 20:32:04
Listen to the news

Solar came into this earnings print with the stock up around 8% over the past month and trading on a rich 53.2x P/E. That is a lot of optimism for a distributor that just reported Q2 revenue of DKK 3.44b and another quarterly loss, with basic earnings per share of DKK 3.4.

The sentiment reckoning is simple. Investors have been paying a premium for Solar based on thin trailing margins of 0.3% and a balance sheet carrying interest that earnings do not comfortably cover. Today’s numbers pressure that optimism and force the market to reassess how much risk is already priced in.

If you like the Solar story but are concerned that thin margins and pressured earnings leave too little room for error, consider our list of stocks with stronger profitability and cleaner balance sheets in the list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (432 results).

Solar bull case hinges on H2 execution

The bullish story around Solar is that recent restructuring, integrations and logistics investments start to lift margins while renewables and electrification support steady growth. Q2 gives mixed evidence. Revenue reached DKK 3,440m with adjusted organic growth of 6.1% after a weak Q1, so demand is at least stabilising. Underlying EBITDA of about DKK 122m and H1 underlying EBITDA of DKK 212m, compared with DKK 243m last year, show efficiency gains are not yet flowing clearly to earnings. Management reconfirmed full year revenue and EBITDA guidance and completed the Sonepar Norge integration and Kumla logistics centre. That ticks important project milestones, but the widened quarterly loss and lower trailing net margin indicate that the margin uplift that supports the bull case is still largely a promise for H2 rather than something already visible in profit.

Bearish concerns on margins and leverage validated

The bear case argues that Solar carries thin profitability, rising working capital and competitive pressure that keep earnings under strain. Q2 goes a long way toward confirming that concern. The company reported a quarterly loss of DKK 27m and basic EPS loss of DKK 3.40 per share, with trailing net margin at only 0.3%. Gross margin declined by about 1.2% as freight, fuel and mix effects weighed on pricing power. Net working capital increased to 17.7% of revenue, driven by roughly DKK 250m higher inventory, and net debt of about DKK 2.3b leaves gearing outside management’s normal range, even if still within covenants. Management expects inventory and gearing to improve in H2, but at today’s starting point the cautious view on margin pressure and balance sheet risk looks well supported by the numbers.

After thin margins, higher inventory and interest coverage questions, this may be only the visible risk. Review our risk analysis for Solar which shows 3 important warning signs.
