UN Deputy Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Thomas Fletcher said on the 14th that the Ebola virus is “gaining the upper hand” in the Congo. The United Nations will allocate an additional $30.5 million to deploy additional staff and expand response to the pandemic. Fletcher chaired an emergency meeting of the United Nations Inter-Agency Standing Committee on the 14th. He issued a statement on the same day saying that the current Ebola outbreak has spread the fastest on record, and currently “one person dies every 30 minutes from this outbreak.”
